Release The Geniuses!
Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 12:25AM Magnify your people's effectiveness without burning them up..
The current business climate means that we have to enable our people to be even more effective than usual - do you agree?
If so, grab some paper and a pen - go on, this only takes a couple of minutes and will definitely make a difference.
A
Think about the people you lead. You would probably consider most of them to be talented, right? - after all you may have hired them or got them to be in your team.
Write down the percentage of the talented ones that actually demonstrate that talent consistently through their actions.
If your answer is less than you would like, consider the following quote
B
"Genius is talent set on fire by courage."
This is so true, it's amazing what one can achieve when courage is in the house. Think about and write down your greatest achievement, then write down the names of people that gave you courage to do it.
Then, next to each name write down what they did to give you courage.
C
You may have "courage givers" like
"they en-couraged me (funny that :-))"
"they coached me"
"they believed in me"
"they trusted me"
"they listened to me"
Whatever "courage givers" you wrote down, I'd like you to go down your list of the people you lead, and make a note of when you last applied the "courage givers" to each person.
D
So what have you concluded from that activity? What you could do to release more genius from the talent in your team?
Write down the actions you will take and when you will do them.
Fantastic! Well done! Make it happen! One day, probably on a really effective training program, your people will be asked questions like " write down the names of people that gave you courage" and wouldn't it be fantastic if one of those names was yours? How does that feel?
Have a great week and I'd be curious to hear any feedback on how your "courage givers" have worked.
Warm Regards,
Adrian,
